FROM A SHORT MENU (December 20, 2003)

Miro Kopčalić got a mobile phone only recently. A technical man to boot, he is still baffled by electronic gadgets of this ilk. As it appears, his new Siemens is a bit too complicated for him. Try as he may, he is struggling with text messages, for example. He has no problem opening and reading his messages, but he is still to learn how to write and send them, too. On occasion, he responds by sending a blank message, just to acknowledge receipt of a message. More often, he resorts to standard responses from a short menu. For some reason, his responses are either in Croatian or English, but he switches from one to the other quite erratically. This choice must be a part of the menu. I just invited him for dinner at my place, where Zoran Radojčić will be cooking fish this evening. My message was in Croatian. He wrote back at once, and in English: “The answer is—yes.” Elated by his prowess, I responded without delay: “Bravo, Miro!” A moment later there was his reply: “Thank you.”
