DANGEROUS CATS (October 6, 2003)
Of all the tourists I see in my little town, the Russians tend to be the least sensibly dressed. I have women in mind, of course. Quite a number of them wear stiletto heels, which are painful to watch on Motovun cobblestones. But garments with alluring fur patterns grab most attention: there are tigers, panthers, leopards, and jaguars aplenty. Dangerous cats, these. A gaggle of Russian tourists just walked by and a thought shaped in my mind: what if these patterns indicate order, rank, or merit of some sort?
