CHEERIO! (September 8, 2003)
As my departure from Reading was approaching, I used to tell people that I would be back on the Web within a week or maybe two. I thought one week was a sufficiently pessimistic estimate of the amount of time it would take me to get connected in Motovun, but I doubled it just to be on the safe side. In fact, it took close to seven weeks to get the telephone connection, and another hour or so to fix all the Internet settings on my computer. But I must admit that there were moments when I was close to giving up all hope. After several visits by the Croatian Telecom people, the prospects looked rather dim. And ever dimmer. But that is behind me now. As soon as I managed to send a few electronic-mail messages and open a few web sites, I ran to the kitchen to open a bottle of the best Teran I had on hand. The first glass is raised now. Cheerio!
