BY THE WAY (July 25, 2003)

On their way from the islands along the Croatian coast to Italy, Annabel and Franco Campigotto came to visit me in Motovun. I know them from London, but they spend most of their summers in Italy. They stayed at the hotel, and we had plenty of time to talk even though I was still unpacking through their visit. “By the way,” asked Franco as we were parting, “do you feel Venetian, Croatian, Serbian, or just a mongrel?” I frowned: “A mongrel, of course!” Indeed, I feel like all of the above, plus British, American, Turkish, African… I forgot to mention that Franco is Venetian.
