BON À TIRER (January 15, 2003)

The last issue of The Jackdaw (No. 25, February 2003) arrived in today’s mail. As always, I read it from cover to cover. When I came to the letters, I saw that they were all about artists’ proofs, showing that the existing rules concerning editions are being abused left and right, as one would expect from a system based on trust. This flurry was in response to the editor’s prompt in the previous issue. But my eye quickly latched onto a French expression containing my name, bon à tirer, or “good to pull.” It is used in printing for the perfect print marked by the artist for the printer to use as a guide while producing an edition of so many “originals.” A felicitous expression, and especially in my case. I am open to suggestions concerning art projects under this name. Perhaps one of the future issues of The Jackdaw could be dedicated to the readers’ proposals. But nothing painful, please!
