AS THE WORLD FIZZLES OUT (February 22, 2003)

When people tell me what they saw on television, heard on the radio, or read in the papers, I usually give them a blank look. I have no idea what they are talking about. I do not go to the movies, I do not follow sports, and I do not read popular books. Simply put, I do not participate in popular culture. And all this within a stone’s throw from London! After a few years in a small Istrian town, I will have only the vaguest notion of what is going on around the world. In a few decades, I will become quite oblivious to it, too. Now, and this is what I am trying to get at here, what will fill my mind as the world fizzles out of it?
