ART HAS A FUTURE (March 5, 2003)
Chelsea School of Art, London College of Fashion, London College of Printing, Camberwell College of Arts, and Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design have recently formed the London Institute, soon to become Britain’s first arts university. Modeled on universities of science and technology, other arts universities are in the making across the land. Among the London Institute’s most famous alumni are Stella McCartney, fashion designer, and Terence Conran, designer and restaurateur. The application for the university status has been filed with the Quality Assurance Agency, the higher-education watchdog, which is expected to make its decision by the beginning of the next year. This is great news for London’s burgeoning fashion industry. After all, art has a future. Of sorts.
