In the Bin Ends Section of The Jackdaw (No. 34, December 2003-January 2004), David Lee is asking his intrepid readers for a collective pronoun for art critics. An interesting problem, this. He offers a whole bunch of plausible pronouns himself—a flannel, a conceit, a compost, a cul-de-sac, a superfluity, a parasite, a biro, a pickle, a junket, a ruskin… He is asking for submissions and offering fame to the winner. My own submission came to me as though in a dream: a puff of art critics. Yes, indeed. In front of me I could clearly see puffs of cannon smoke rolling across the waves someplace in the Caribbean in the time of buccaneers. An image straight out of Mikhail Bulgakov, of course.
