A BODY FALLING (January 26, 2003)

Having spotted from my kitchen window a new sign attached to the Reading Abbey ruins, I went out to investigate. Sure enough, it is a warning against climbing the Abbey walls. “Danger,” it says in big letters, and it shows a body falling. Although there is some English there, as well, the sign errs on the safe side, for the hapless climber may be illiterate, as one would expect from local teenagers. It takes a second to realize that this is the work of a clever lawyer. The borough washes its hands in case some stupid kid tumbles down from the ancient walls. The sign was there for all to see—go sue your parents!
