“PLEASE FLUSH THE TOILET AFTER USE” (May 1, 2003)

Thus a printed sign in every toilet on my floor of my office building. Silly. “Flush” would be enough. What else but the toilet could you flush? Also, who would ever flush the toilet before use? “Please” could be added for good form, but it would remain superfluous. Come to think of it, the whole sign is superfluous. It is there because the toilets in my building do not flush properly, and so a turd is often left floating in the water after flushing. Therefore, you sometimes need to flush twice or even thrice. No-one would think of fixing the toilets, which seldom flush properly in Britain. All this is due to poor design, of course, but redesigning the toilets is simply unimaginable. Thus such silly signs throughout the land.
