“CLICK HERE TO FIND LOVE NOW” (January 18, 2003)
Thus an electronic-mail message that I just deleted before it fully opened on my screen. I am battling with spam ever since my return from Istria. The university address book must have fallen into the hands of some agency that sells such stuff to advertisers of all sorts. I delete everything at once, but there is so much of it that I occasionally catch a glimpse of a colorful picture or a flashing headline. The offer is quite varied: computer software and hardware, dental services, cheap loans, weight loss, pornography, insurance, penis enlargement, dating, hair implants, on-line music and movies. But dating is perhaps the most popular category. And it breaks my heart. Among thousands and thousands who receive such messages, a few poor devils end up by clicking here and there in search of love now and then.
