“BETTER THAN I EXPECTED” (October 20, 2003)

Thus I as of late whenever people ask me about my new life. I just talked on the phone with a fellow from my bank in Reading, whom I have known for years, and the expression struck me as somewhat odd for the first time. Namely, I cannot be sure any longer exactly what I have told my banker—or anyone else, for that matter—about my retirement and the move to Motovun. Was I just confident that things would turn out all right? Or was I visibly happy? Or was I kind of ecstatic? At any rate, my stock line needs some tweaking: “Better than I expected, and I expected a great deal.” That sounds more like it already.
