WRONG NUMBER (December 18, 2000)
Yesterday afternoon I learned from my mother that the phone had rung some time earlier. She missed the call, though. At first she did not hear it ringing, and then she had to cross the entire room to reach the phone… As no-one had called in the meantime, I dialed the number that retrieves the last caller’s number. I was not sure at first, but I thought the number was that of Lauren’s mobile phone. It indeed was, as it turned out when I checked the address book in my own mobile phone. I called her back, but her phone was busy. I did not try again, though. When Giuseppe Mastruzzo called today, we talked a bit about Lauren and me. He has stayed close to both of us. I told him that she had called but that my mother could not get to the phone in time. “Oh,” he said, “that was a wrong number.” He told Lauren earlier today that he had just called one friend but ended up talking to another, whose number he had actually dialed. This is when she told him she had done something similar yesterday afternoon, but that no-one picked up the phone. That cleared the mystery.
