WHERE TO FIND INCENSE IN READING (December 11, 2000)
Incense has been a staple for me ever since childhood. I cannot imagine being without it for long. When I travel east, I always bring a load back home. Sometimes, when I travel west, I take it with me. In London, I always know where to find incense to my taste. But when I started running out of it in Reading last week, I realized I had no idea where to go. Jennie Winter, a friend and a neighbor of old, luckily came to the rescue. She returned to Reading for the weekend from way up north, where she had moved a couple of years now, and I had a hunch she would know the right place. And she did, although it did not come to her at once. In the end, she took me to the street market at St. Mary’s Butts, which is open only on Saturday, and we quickly found the right stall. I practically cleaned up the man selling incense, but I am likely to look him up this Saturday, too. You can never have too much incense at home.
