THE MAIN THREAT (June 12, 2000)
Pierre Restany: What do you think are the cultural prospects for England (or should we still be saying Great Britain?) in the European context?
Henry Meyric Hughes: Inevitably, this will depend on economic and political developments and, I must say, I am fairly pessimistic, at the moment, about the chances of our becoming more fully integrated into Europe, within the next five years. I believe that the main threat to our prosperity and our cultural wellbeing lies in a growing isolationism and sense of self-sufficiency.
