THE ERUDITE ONES (December 19, 2000)
Last night I went to the party organized by the Institute of Ideas at the Asylum Club in Central London mainly because I wanted to meet Sandy Starr, who had managed the Cultural Wars website until recently. Having communicated with him via electronic mail for nearly a year, I have become really fond of him. As soon as I arrived, I asked Claire Fox, who had invited me to the party, whether Sandy was there. Not yet, I learned, but he would certainly join us later on. Claire told me he was very busy developing another site associated with the Institute. Sandy arrived an hour later, and we finally met. The rest of the evening we had a lively conversation, which Barb Jungr joined at some point. We talked about everything under the sun: writing, film, music, the Internet, culture, the fate of the human species. We disagreed on many things, including evolutionary psychology, but we were always on the same page, as it were. As I was leaving, I bumped into Sandy outside the Club, where he was talking to someone on the mobile phone. He told the person on the other end to wait a moment, and he walked toward me. “You are as erudite in real life as you are on the ether!” he smiled over our vigorous handshake. I returned the compliment and waved him goodbye.
