INDEPENDENCE DAY (July 4, 2000)
Across the isle of a crowded train there lounges a lumpy Scottish girl of about fifteen. Her feet in unlaced sneakers—or trainers, as they are called in Britain—are resting on the seat next to her. She is dressed in Nike products from head to toe; she is listening to a Sony compact-disk player; she is talking into her mobile phone from time to time; and she is drinking water from a large plastic bottle. I bet she has no idea she was born American.
