HOW I BECAME HISTORY (May 1, 2000)
Lauren and the children just returned from Los Angeles, where they spent nearly a month during the Easter vacations. Much of the time they were with Lauren’s family, including a few days with her grandfather and his wife in Palm Springs. A few days ago I asked her on the phone whether the family was giving her any trouble because of me. “No trouble at all,” she said breezily, “as they all think we are getting divorced.” Of course, she had not tried to persuade them otherwise, ostensibly because they would only pester her if they knew there was any chance we would stay together. Since her return yesterday afternoon, I realize this is what she must think, too. “No trouble at all,” I can almost hear her as she brushes aside all the irritations of our marriage.
