HARD WAY, RIGHT WAY (May 26, 2000)

One of the leading stories on the news last night was about a man who had robbed the fellow passengers of a plane and then jumped out with a parachute. This morning on the news, I just heard from a colleague at work, one of the leading stories was that the man was found dead. His parachute, apparently a home-made contraption, failed to open. Although I had not felt anything like admiration for the brazen robber, this morning I do feel a bit sorry for him. Deep down, I must have felt that he had earned his loot the hard way—that is, nearly the right way.
