FRESH FIGS (August 16, 2000)
Today I bought a basket of fresh figs at the Athenian Grocery on Moscow Road off Queensway. They were expensive but irresistible. “Where are they from?” I asked one of the shop attendants as he was weighing the basket. “Lebanon,” he smiled, “but they are delicious.” Painted inside and outside in the colors of the Greek flag, the shop supplies a vast variety of products from the Middle East and North Africa. The figs are delicious, too.
