FREELOADING (July 13, 2000)
If I am not a freeloader, defined by Webster’s as someone who imposes upon another’s generosity or hospitality without sharing in the cost or responsibility involved, why am I so annoyed by the Annenbergs’ accusation of freeloading?

Well, well. If I were a freeloader back then, less than a year before my second marriage fell apart at long last, I would not have been so annoyed by the Annenbergs’ accusation of freeloading. At best, I would have only feigned being annoyed, which would involve no emotional pain whatsoever on my part. In fact, I kept my annoyance to myself so as not to give the Annenbergs any pleasure. By the time this piece was penned, though, freeloading was a moot point already. It was clear to all concerned that my second marriage was on its hind legs…
