FAR, FAR AWAY (July 21, 2000)

This afternoon I will take a train to London in full mountain gear. I will not be returning to Reading before my flight to Ljubljana. At dawn on Tuesday I will go to Gatwick. Jože Dekleva, my mountain-climbing companion for many a year, will be waiting for me at Brnik, the main Slovene airport. At dawn the next day we will take a bus to one of the high mountain passes and start our climb. By Wednesday noon we will be among the rocks. Reading and London will be far away. My computer will be far away. My Residua will be far, far away. Far, far away. The pain of separation is already setting in.
