BECOMING (August 12, 2000)
Jeremy Cooper’s book about Joshua Compston, No FuN Without U: The Art of Factual Nonsense,[1] was launched while I was in the Alps. Knowing how much I would miss this event, Lauren went to the launch and bought a copy for me. She and the children joined me in the Alps a few days later, and she gave me the book as soon as we returned to London. It looks very much to my taste. Each page I open is full of interesting stuff. But I am so excited by it that I cannot imagine reading it. It will probably take me a while to even look through all the photographs. I am surprised by my reticence, of course. The only explanation that comes to mind is simple enough: I hate to see Joshua becoming history.
