A SUFFICIENT COMPLIMENT (December 15, 2000)

Searching again through my Residua on the Internet, I was surprised today that Brian Sewell’s name did not appear in any piece written in 1999, but I was even more surprised that it appeared in as many as five pieces written in 2000. On the spur of the moment, I printed out all these pieces as they appeared on the computer screen, containing all the relevant information about my website and myself, and I sent them by post to London’s art critic of choice. In retrospect, I am a bit perplexed by my action. At the time, I felt like sharing with him my surprise, exuberant as it was, but I now realize that all the pieces I sent him were not only critical of him but also rather insulting. In retrospect, again, I must have taken the view, of which I was completely unaware at the time, that being mauled by someone like me was a sufficient compliment for someone like him.
