“MIRACLE AT THE SERPENTINE” (June 19, 2000)

Thus Susannah Herbert about Julia Peyton-Jones, the Serpentine’s director, in today’s Daily Telegraph. The miracle’s oversized photo accompanying the drooling eulogy goes hand-in-hand with the recollection of a long line of bland, barren, and boring exhibitions at Serpentine Gallery. Dressed in prim clothes of the upper crust and wearing a thin, smug, and pious smile of a resourceful socialite, Peyton-Jones fits her part all too well. One can only hope that the double-barreled miracle is being “sold” to the public in anticipation of another lofty job in London’s art world, which would mean that the Serpentine might—just might—have another chance under new management.
