JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (August 13, 1992)

Marko, Dorian, and I are absorbed by Helmut Walcha’s rendering of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor on the organ of St. Laurenskerk in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. According to scholars, Bach was about twenty when he wrote this masterpiece. Marko is seventeen. Dorian is eight weeks old. I am forty-six. To the best of my knowledge, Walcha was in his fifties or sixties when this recording was made. What could possibly join us across such a wide spectrum of experience?
