A STRONG COUPLE (August 23, 2021)

Marko, my No. 1 son, and Lucie, his new wife, came to visit me a week ago. Maya, my daughter, was supposed to join them a day later, but she decided it was too risky to come to Croatia on account of the pandemic, and so she cancelled her flight a week earlier. Dorian, my No. 2 son, is still to come to Motovun for the first time, but it is anyone’s guess if and when he will join his half-brother and sister. Anyhow, it was wonderful to spend a few days with Marko and Lucie, who left for Venice three days ago, and who subsequently went to visit Lucie’s mother in France. They stayed in Hotel Kaštel on account of my house’s ruggedness, for there is not a single bed in it, but we had spent many hours together nonetheless. This time around, I got to know Lucie much better than on her first visit four years ago, when she was Marko’s girlfriend still. And I grew to like her very much. What amazed me this time around, Marko lauded Lucie quite often, and in her presence. She would just smile as he went on and on about her many virtues. By the time they left, I grew leery of my off-the-cuff challenge to the two of them on the day of their marriage a couple of years ago (“On Marriage and Divorce: My Challenge to Marko and Lucie,” June 29, 2019). Now they strike me as a strong couple, and I hope they will stay together for ever and ever.
