THE PUZZLE OF ELECTRICITY (April 24, 2020)
Recently I came across a newspaper article claiming that the Internet presents a huge threat to the environment. What? As it turns out, the trouble is with electricity that powers it together with zillions of computers, mobile phones, and other gadgets that feed on it around the world. To this day, most of the electricity is produced using fossil fuels. And abandoning oil, coal, and natural gas will take many more years according to the most optimistic scenarios available at present. Not long ago, I stumbled upon an article from another newspaper arguing that electric cars are also a huge threat to the environment. One more time, good old electricity was to blame. Gosh! And both newspapers were among the best ones available on planet earth nowadays. Still, their readers appear to be entirely oblivious of the way electricity is actually produced. How else explain the articles that state the patently obvious? What strikes me as truly amazing is that the very same newspapers come up with untold articles claiming that democracy is the only way to protect the environment in the years to come. By implication, human stupidity belongs to fiction. Nay, fake news. Which is why the puzzle of electricity is merrily shoved under the old rug. Indeed, who in the world would vote for threats to the environment, let alone huge ones? Perish the thought.
