NOTA BENE (April 23, 2020)
In Latin, nota is a “note” or a “letter,” and notare is “to observe” or “to write.” Whence nota bene, which stands for “observe carefully” or “take special notice,” as well as notarius, which translates as “a scribe” or “a notary.” One notable synonym of nota is commentariolum, which means “a short treatise” or “commentary.” Enough, though. The point is that the note has deep Latin roots as a literary form (“A Note on the Note as a Literary Form,” May 8, 2014). All by itself, this insight gives me enormous pleasure. Nay, gratification. For the note has played an important rôle in my magnum opus since its early days. And it is still popping up left and right to this day.
