“THE SELF-EFFACING RANKO BON” (May 16, 2020)

When one of the fellows working for the company that supplies drinking water to Motovun came to my house this morning, he addressed me in an unusual way: “the self-effacing Ranko Bon.” He used the Croatian adjective samozatajni with a big grin on his face. After he read the water meter in my basement, based on which I will pay my water bill for this month, he decided to explain himself. “Well,” he was a bit embarrassed, “this is how Korado Korlević calls you on the radio!” He did not remember why I was mentioned by the most popular man of science in Istria, who has been hosting regular radio talks for many years, but the adjective stayed with him nonetheless. We both laughed, and I told the fellow that I heard from others that Korado would mention me most often in connection with space colonization, which used to be the greatest fascination of my youth. Another subject we shared was climate change, I added. Neither of us is optimistic about it, either. When the fellow departed, the smile would not go away from my face. The adjective is quite to my liking, I must admit with all the modesty I can muster.
