NEW FUCKING TUSCANY, AGAIN AND AGAIN (March 30, 2016)

I was already in bed last night when the electricity conked out. When I checked the time, it was about half an hour before midnight. This struck me as a problem far from Motovun. Quite likely, a good part of Istria was without electricity in the early days of this year’s tourist season. And so I waited to see when the electricity would come back. The house got colder and colder, for the central heating system cannot work without electricity, and I wrapped myself ever more tightly in my bedding. I would doze off from time to time, but I kept waiting for the heating system to kick in once again. When it finally did, I checked the time again, and it was around one o’clock in the morning. There was no electricity for an hour and a half, no less. The heating system went crazy, and it kept working at full tilt for quite a while. And Istria is trumpeted far and wide as the new fucking Tuscany, as though good wine and olive oil are sufficient for such a bold claim! To this day, the morons who run the peninsula regularly forget that tourism makes little sense without the basic infrastructure: electricity, water, sewage, roads, parking, garbage collection…
