MILENA AND BRANKO (November 23, 2016)
At the end of the tourist season, Benjamin’s is closed on Wednesdays, and so I went to Hotel Kaštel for lunch. Having ordered already, I sat alone in the dining room. Out of the blue, my parents popped up in my mind. And I started talking to them. “You aren’t dead,” I started. “You’re part of me now.” After a brief pause, I addressed them by name. “Milena and Branko,” I said, “you are alive in me.” Tears welled up in my eyes. I was overcome with love for my parents. Or was it myself? So as not to embarrass the waiter on duty, I wiped my face and smiled. I was still alone in the dining room, but there were three of us.
