CRAWLING WITH LADYBUGS (March 29, 2016)
My house is crawling with ladybugs. Asian ladybugs, to be precise. Orange in color, they seem to have replaced the red variety in just a few years. Many people in Motovun complain about these invaders at this time. Some discover their nests, where thousands of them can be found at a time. I have not yet found such a nest in my house, but they are everywhere I look. When shutters are open on windows and doors, they head for the light. I collect hundreds of them into the palm of my hand and throw them out. When they first appeared in my house, it was either too early or too late in the season, but things have changed. After just a few years, they have adjusted to the new environment, and they are coming forth in the spring. The only question is where are the red ladybugs of yesteryear? Quite a few people in these parts believe that the invaders have destroyed them. Some even claim that orange ladybugs eat red ones, which I find hard to believe. Be that as it may, I am amazed by the speed with which they have adapted to their new environment. Luckily for them, I have returned from Zagreb just in time to throw them out of my house. Most of them would have perished otherwise.
