WILTING (July 21, 2015)

This morning I noticed that most of the weeds in my garden are yellow by now. They are lying flat. Also, many trees in the woods under the garden are wilting already. Their leaves are drooping lifelessly. Here and there, the leaves are turning yellow and even brown. Looking across the Mirna valley beyond, much of the landscape is turning yellow, as well. And brown patches can be seen here and there. There has been no rain for quite a while, and the heat is pretty amazing the last few weeks. But it is late July only. How about August and September? Without rain, this part of Istria will become very like Tuscany, its supposed model in terms of tourism. Except that plants here are not as sturdy as those over there when it comes to excessive heat and little rain. By and by, the plants will learn a few new tricks, no doubt. Actually, they are learning already for all to see. Shedding leaves is the best trick available under the circumstances. And wilting is the first step in the right direction.
