Croats are electing their president today. As I have long promised the incumbent, and in writing, I will vote in Croatia never again (“My Best Wishes: A Letter to Croatian President Ivo Josipović,” April 15, 2011). I wish him to lose the second round of elections simply because I believe that no-one should stay in power for longer than a single term. Five years ought to be enough. And getting entrenched in power is the pits. Thus I wish the contender, if successful this time around, to lose the next presidential elections. But what I wish most of all is that ever fewer Croats fall for elections of any kind. Democracy in its present guise is nothing but a sham. Capitalism’s eager servant, it serves to confuse and confound the ever more silent majority. No matter who comes to power at any level of government, everything stays exactly the same, anyway. Voting is for the birds, no doubt whatsoever. And especially in view of horrors to come. Climate change is not about democracy, to be sure.
