TYPES OF OBESITY (April 18, 2015)

Obesity is in the news. It is among the hallmarks of our era. An ever-larger number of people in the developed world suffers from it. Many a government has been looking for ways to stem obesity, but without palpable success. New research in Britain shows that there are at least six different types of obese people, and that each subgroup deserves special treatment: heavy-drinking men, young healthy women, unhappy and anxious middle-aged, affluent and healthy older people, physically sick but happy older people, and those with the poorest health. By the way, most of the unhappy and anxious middle-aged are actually women. The National Health Service is now targeting obesity in a new nationwide program. Apparently, each subgroup will get different treatment. In this context, a researcher from one of the British universities specializing in health research is cited: “Policies designed to tackle obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles often target individuals just because they are obese. We are all different and different health approaches work for different people.” Well put. As health research progresses, the number of types of obesity is sure to grow, and so is the number of health approaches. In a few short years, we may well have hundreds and maybe even thousands of different types of obesity. In the foreseeable future, each obese person will have his or her own personal therapy, as well as a therapist to match, for there are untold ways of advising each one of them to eat less. “Eat less?” one can imagine most of them asking. “What could it possibly mean?” It can only be hoped that the National Health Service will have the resources to stem this mind-boggling health problem.
