TRUE CHARACTERS (February 11, 2015)
Having written yet another story about Chieftain Buroogu yesterday evening, I started thinking about all the other characters of my stories. Thus I went through my records this morning. And the number of stories accumulated over the years simply amazed me. It all started with Tlön, of whom there are fifty-two stories over the years—1978, 1980, 1981, 1991, 1995 (2), 1996, 1997, 1998 (3), 2001, 2003 (3), 2004 (3), 2005 (4), 2006 (2), 2007 (3), 2008 (6), 2009 (3), 2010 (3), 2011 (2), 2012 (3), 2013 (6), and 2014 (2). Emperor Dö followed with six stories—1978, 1988, 1989, 1995, 1997, and 1999. Emperor Khah came next with nine stories—1984, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, and 1998. Actually, one of the stories, which was written in 1995, brought emperors Khah and Dö together, thus leading to double counting. And Chieftain Buroogu came last with six stories—2014 (5), and 2015. That adds up to seventy-two stories. Wow! I have no idea whether the two emperors will pop up ever again, but Tlön and Buroogu surely have bright futures. To my joy, I have never spent a single second wondering what any of my characters would do next. They simply pop up in my mind, and a story takes shape without any effort on my part. They are true characters, to be sure.
