TRIBE AND NOTHING BUT TRIBE (February 6, 2015)

There has been much banter in the social sciences over the last century or so whether or not society exists. Many a social scientist has claimed that only individuals exist and that society is an abstract notion devoid of substance. It has taken me a long time to come to the resolution of this quandary. To my surprise, it comes from evolutionary psychology, as it were. All it takes is a quick look at the origins of the human species about a hundred-thousand years ago. Namely, both individual and society are abstract notions devoid of substance. Tribe is the only notion that makes any substantive sense when it comes to the human species at this stage of its evolution. The notion of tribe is still deeply ingrained in the human mind, but the social reality has changed due to the explosion of human population in the last few millennia, and especially the last few centuries. Society is becoming ever more abstract. The same is true of family, yet another notion that is losing its ground in reality. And individuals are becoming increasingly confused in the tumultuous crowd. Tribe and nothing but tribe is at the root of human existence. Many a confusion in the social sciences vanishes as if by magic as soon as humans are understood as tribal creatures that have been ripped out of their cradle. Forever fumbling for their forebears, they are ever more confused by society and individuals alike.
