Naomi Klein’s last book is all over the place nowadays. Here are the words from the book’s vaunted introduction in one of the newspapers: “The alarm bells of the climate crisis have been ringing in our ears for years and are getting louder all the time—yet humanity has failed to change course. What is wrong with us?” A good question, but do not look for the answer in the lauded book. She goes on and on about capitalism and the like. What is worse, she has much advice to offer: “Time is tight, to be sure. But we could commit ourselves, tomorrow, to radically cutting our fossil fuel emissions and beginning the shift to zero-carbon sources of energy based on renewable technology, with a full-blown transition underway within the decade.” Even if we committed ourselves to all this, which is well beyond our abilities, nothing much would happen. We would still be sliding into oblivion, that is. Predictably, she offers a load of moronic ideas on changes that need to be made as soon as possible. Her last words are sweet, though: “Can we pull it off? All I know is that nothing is inevitable.” Well, being human is surely inevitable. And this holds for the lot of Klein’s avid readers. What will they do after they plough through her book? They will shake their heads. And they will keep shaking their heads for days on end. To wit, this changes nothing.
