Fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria are on a rampage. Mimicking Mohammed, who destroyed all the idols in Mecca in his time, they are destroying Mesopotamian artifacts in the areas they have conquered in Iraq and Syria. Everyone is outraged. Even the contemporary artists are condemning the destruction of priceless cultural heritage. As for me, I am following the rampage with relative calm. The way I see things, this is only the beginning. Sooner or later, the cultural heritage of the human species will be smashed to smithereens. The whole lot. And by the very same species. Fighters of all sorts will make sure that nothing remains behind them. Just like the ISIS fighters right now, they will have some story to tell, but all of these stories will be equally inane. The fighter who smashes Michelangelo’s David will rail against homosexuals, and the squad that brings the Eifel Tower down will rail against the European Union. For good measure, the fighter who sets fire to the British Museum will rail against imperialism. Unbeknownst to all of them, they will be united by the rage against climate change. All things priceless will become fair game.
