THE ONLY TOYS (July 13, 2015)

Judging by the tourist crowds that visit Motovun, mobile phones are the only toys children crave nowadays. And they are given to ever-younger children to play with. Some of them are still toddlers, but they are adamant about their, as it were, rights. Smaller children go for all sorts of games while slightly older ones are on social networks already. By the early teens, they are no less than pros at networking. From the vantage point of their parents, mobile phones are a godsend. The toys are quite affordable at this stage, and the children are a joy to be with while they fool around with them on the quiet. Besides, they are learning all kinds of useful things as they play. Basic literacy and numeracy are acquired well before school, but many of the skills the children hone as they grow are beyond their parents’ wits. Although they can hardly walk, let alone run or jump, they are perfectly in tune with their times across much of the rich world. At any rate, their parents can hardly walk, either. In simple words, everything is hunky-dory. Assuming that the present bliss will go on for ever and ever, and that mobile phones will remain the only toys children will ever crave, just like their parents. Blissful assumptions, these. As well as hilarious past compare.
