THE LAST INJECTION (July 30, 2015)
“Hin und Weg” (2015) directed by Christian Zübert was the last film my beloved and I saw the last day of the film festival this year. Accompanied by his wife, mother, and a bunch of closest friends, the hero of the movie cycles from Frankfurt to Oostende to his assisted death, which is legal in Belgium but not in Germany. Although in his mid-thirties, he has an incurable disease that would render him dependent on others in a short while, as well as dead within a few years. Surrounded by the tearful bunch, he dies peacefully shortly after the last injection. Having had my fill of the story half way through the movie, I kept looking toward the sky. Clouds were gathering, and it was ever more windy, but there were no signs of the rescuing rain. Losing all hope, I yearned for that last injection. When it came at long last, I felt outright relieved. Nay, invigorated. On our way home, I could not but keep musing about assisted death for the film festival itself. Will I ever see the day when Motovun is finally left in peace? Even I would mercifully shed a tear in memory of so many wonderful movies, including the last one. “Blown Away” would be the English translation of the German title. How very appropriate!
