It is amazing how much attention the Greek referendum has attracted today. All the media are following it with utmost care. The count will be followed through the night with attention bordering on drama. And yet, the referendum is utterly meaningless. Even the question, which is to be answered to either with a “yes” or a “no,” is far from understandable to the voters. In fact, even the politicians who worded it are not sure what the question is actually about. To wit, the hapless referendum will resolve absolutely nothing, and the Greek politicians will keep begging their colleagues from the European Union for this or that, which they will claim represents the will of the Greek people. And the farce will go on and on for months, and perhaps even for years. Which is entirely in keeping with the Union’s ambiguous status, for nobody can be sure what it actually is. The same holds for the European currency and the so-called monetary union behind it. Ambiguous as it is, today’s referendum completes the sorry picture. Welcome to the mother of all confusions, which haltingly started in Greece two and a half millennia ago. Some call it civilization, but to no avail.
