THE FIRST TWO LIMBS OF YOGA, AGAIN AND AGAIN (May 3, 2015)
I just searched my magnum opus for the first two limbs of yoga, restraints and observances, and I came up with nine pieces of writing. The number surprised me, I must admit. The first one comes from 2011, and it sets the stage quite well. The first two limbs are real killers, as I put it back then. Three pieces follow in 2012. I wrote one piece each in 2013 and 2014, but I came up with no less than three pieces in 2015 so far. And I wrote the last piece on the subject only yesterday. Indeed, the first two limbs of yoga are uppermost on my mind much of the time. In particular, this applies to nonviolence from the first limb and contentment from the second. These two are real killers, no doubt. Even though I occasionally feel that I can master them both in due course, I live in doubt much of the time. How about the future, though? The only remedy that comes to my mind is complete and total seclusion. A tiny hermitage far from the hubbub, for example. Even better, a cave in the Himalayas. Not for nothing have yogis of all ages done their best not to set their eyes on other human beings, let alone to have any intercourse with them. The first two limbs of yoga in a nutshell.
