TERAN! (October 31, 2015)
Browsing through the leading Istrian newspaper, I came across an article about a newspaper from Kopar in Slovenia that got into legal trouble for printing an advertisement about this year’s Teran and Truffles Festival in Motovun. Namely, the name of the wine cannot appear in print if it is not from Slovenia. To the best of my understanding, Slovene winemakers got the name protected with the relevant authorities of the European Union. Croatian winemakers did not react in time, and the legal wrangle could easily take years to resolve. For the time being, Teran cannot be found in Istria within the borders of Croatia, at least by the Union’s august standards. Annoyed by the article, I felt like yelling the name of the wine I was drinking at the time at the top of my voice: “Teran!” And then a legal ruse came to my mind out of the blue: how about using an exclamation point whenever printing the name of Teran that is not from Slovenia? Besides, it would make the wine’s name so much more memorable. Long live Teran!
