The Greek coalition of the radical left, Syriza, is in the news. Although just short of a clear victory, the coalition has been victorious in yesterday’s elections. It is now looking for yet another coalition partner before taking power. Bent on freeing Greece from the clutches of financial austerity, which is imposed by the European Union with Germany’s blessing, it threatens not only the eurozone, but the Union itself. As many newspapers blare this morning, Syriza puts Greece on a collision course with Europe. And I am over the moon about the prospect. Before going to sleep last night, I kept going on and on about Syriza as I caressed my beloved in bed. She teased me about it this morning, but my enthusiasm remains unscathed. The Union is a sham. The same holds for its currency. Notwithstanding its primary function to keep its member states out of war, which is commendable enough, it has failed to offer anything else worth talking about ever since its lackluster inauguration a generation ago. The whole of southern Europe can testify to the Union’s aimlessness. So, let it rip, Syriza! Europe is for the birds, anyhow.
