SILVER LININGS GALORE (July 6, 2015)
The current heatwave is on my mind much of the time. Although I am doing my best to cool my house each morning, it is getting pretty warm by the evening. Day after day, I am ever less successful in spite of my zeal. The temperature in the house may well reach twenty-nine degrees Celsius by tomorrow evening. Luckily, rain is expected the following few days, and it will bring the temperature in the house down. I am annoyed by all the attention that I give the silly heatwave, but I also realize that there is a silver lining to my predicament. Most important, now I am following the news much less diligently than under “normal” weather conditions. And there is hardly anything that annoys me more than the news. For example, the hubbub surrounding the Greek financial crisis drives me nuts. Survival focuses the mind, no doubt. Which makes me realize that there is a silver lining to escalating climate change, as well. By and by, it will focus many a mind, to be sure. There will be neither time nor energy for silly stuff of any kind. Unexpectedly, the realization makes me kind of happy about the future. One way or another, the current heatwave has brought silver linings galore.
