ROMEOS AND JULIETS, AGAIN (July 2, 2015)

Stanka Babić is sitting in the town loggia when I come out of the archway connecting the upper and lower squares in Motovun. It is early afternoon, and I just finished my lunch at Benjamin’s. As soon as she sees me, Stanka waves, and I wave back on my way home down Borgo. Less than half an hour later, she is still in the loggia when I appear again and head for the archway. This time I am going to the hotel terrace with my laptop in my arm, but she slaps her side and starts laughing out loud. “Now I know,” she exclaims with conviction, “you’ve got someone up there!” A year my senior, she is about Romeos and Juliets only. Nothing but love affairs is of any interest to her. I wave at her once again, but she puckers her lips and shakes her head knowingly. No fooling around with her, that is.
