PURE SHIT, THE MOVIE (June 21, 2015)

As I was browsing the online newspapers a short while ago, I came across an article about a famous movie I had never heard about. Made in Australia by Bert Deling, it is entitled “Pure Shit” (1975). A young woman dies from a heroin overdose, and four junkies who knew her spend a day in her car combing the streets of Melbourne in search of good quality heroin. Whence the title, of course. The movie is by junkies and for junkies, which is why I have missed it for no less than forty years. But the first thought that crossed my mind upon learning about the movie surprised me no end. To wit, it offers a palpable climate-change exit for zillions of clueless young people today. Luckily for them, many new drugs have popped up over the last forty years. The exit is ever brighter, that is. The junkie classic is thus likely to grow in popularity in the foreseeable future, and it may well become the movie to watch in twenty years or so. By then, the lure of its title will become nigh irresistible.
