ON HUMAN INGENUITY (April 21, 2015)

Years ago, everyone I knew was dubious about my predictions of civil war in Yugoslavia, but I was right in the end. The only thing I was wrong about was the horror of the internecine war. All sides excelled in atrocities. And so I ended up being too optimistic about the future. Everyone I know is dubious right now about my predictions of dramatic climate change. The only thing I am likely to be wrong about is the horror of the war that will accompany the natural disaster. This is where human ingenuity has peaked so many times in the past, but the coming war is likely to surpass all the peaks by a wide margin. Ever more atrocious, atrocities will pile up sky high. Once again, I will end up being too optimistic about the future. And my fellow humans will see to it without fail.
